UK Marriage/Spouse English Test (IELTS Life Skills A1/A2/B1)

As per UK immigration laws, any individual applying to enter or remain in the UK as the partner of a British citizen or settled resident must meet the English language requirement to demonstrate that they can communicate in English. To satisfy this requirement, applicants are required to pass a level A1 English language test, approved by the UK Home Office, to prove their speaking and listening abilities.

Since November 2010, SLS Pakistan has been offering the UKVI-approved A1 English language test for candidates looking to secure a Spouse Visa to the UK. In line with new regulations, all non-European migrants who intend to join a British citizen or a non-European national living permanently in the UK will need to show a basic understanding of the English language, unless they are nationals of countries where English is the majority language.

This requirement applies to individuals seeking to join their partner as a spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, same-sex partner, fiancée(e), or proposed civil partner. It is mandatory for individuals applying both from within the UK and those applying overseas. The regulation, which has been in place since 29 November 2010, mandates that applicants must demonstrate a basic command of the English language at A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

To fulfill this requirement, applicants must show evidence that they have successfully passed the approved A1 test, which covers speaking and listening skills. The test must be undertaken with one of the UK Border Agency’s recognized English test providers, such as SLS Pakistan, an authorized testing center for UKVI-approved exams.

This compulsory English language test helps ensure that migrant spouses or partners can communicate at a foundational level in English, which facilitates their integration and communication within the UK society. The introduction of these tests was aimed at encouraging better social integration, fostering self-sufficiency, and improving the lives of migrants by making it easier for them to engage with their communities.
